My Reading List

I’m an avid reader of fiction. If you glanced over “My Story” on this website, then you know that I’m not a student of literature or creative writing. My criteria for a great book is simply when I was enjoying it so much that I wanted to get past whatever else was on my plate at the time so that I could get back to the book, although runner up criteria for me are not having to read a hundred pages to “get into” the story and strong finishes. Some of my more “current” favorites, listed alphabetically by title:

  • Blood Works by Michael Connelly
  • The Caine Mutiny by Herman Wouk
  • The Charm School by Nelson DeMille
  • Child44 by Tom Rob Smith
  • City of Thieves by David Benioff
  • Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth
  • Kane and Abel by Jeffrey Archer
  • Mystic River by Dennis Lehane
  • One Shot by Lee Child
  • Paranoia by Joseph Finder
  • Protect and Defend by Richard North Patterson
  • Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson
  • Transfer of Power by Vince Flynn
  • Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

I know that this is “My” Reading List, but my wife, Barbie, is also a voracious reader, reading several books for every book I manage to read. So, I thought it would be nice to add some of her favorites as well. While Barbie and I don’t generally read the same books, it is interesting that she would also include among her favorites some of mine, namely, City of Thieves, Kane and Abel, Protect and Defend, Snow Falling on Cedars and Water for Elephants. Barbie’s current favorites, just some of the many books she has enjoyed, include:

  • The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
  • Crimson Petal and the White by Michael Faber
  • The Handyman by Carolyn See
  • Help by Kathryn Stockett
  • Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
  • Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet
  • The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
  • The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
  • Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
  • Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See
  • The Story of Edgar Sawtelle by David Wroblewski
  • The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
