Like motherhood, the American flag and apple pie, philanthropy is to be admired and cherished.

Certainly, there are many deserving causes and my wife, Barbie, and I support as many as we can. One of our favorites is finding a cure for diabetes. And four of my favorite sources of pursuing a cure for diabetes are superstar endocrinologist Anne Peters, M.D. Children’s Diabetes Foundation, Joslin Diabetes Center, and New York Times bestselling author Brenda Novak. You will find links to more about each of them and their endless efforts on pursuing a cure for diabetes on my Resources page. Just click here.

Now, in the spirit of full disclosure, I must point out that I am diabetic, that Anne is my endocrinologist and a dear friend (the friendship came after the respect), and that what Anne, CDF, Joslin and Brenda all share in common is an extraordinary commitment to finding a cure for diabetes. There are also many other great diabetic charities to support. My goal is simply to encourage you to find one or two about which you can become passionate, as Barbie and I are about Anne, CDF, Joslin and Brenda.

Why diabetes? There are 30 million diabetics in the U.S. today, that’s almost 10% of the American population. And the number is growing by leaps and bounds every year. Then there are those who are borderline diabetics, known as pre-diabetics. The number of those in the U.S. today is 79 million. More than one in three Americans today is either diabetic or pre-diabetic.

The medical cost of treating diabetics in the U.S. today is approximately one quarter of a  trillion dollars per year. Whether you have diabetes or not, this disease is costing you enormously, year in and year out. We all need to join the cause to find a cure for diabetes. To do whatever we can to deliver this disease into the past tense.

Today, with education and discipline, we can manage diabetes. To that extent, I speak from experience. But we don’t yet have cures for diabetes.

Progress is being made, cures are on the horizon. But there is much work to be done. Please join Barbie and me, to put diabetes support on your list of worthy causes today. Whatever you can do. There’s no such thing as too little. Whatever you can do, no matter how little, is . . . great!
